I. "Teaching" pillar

I. "Teaching" pillar

Module 1 "Video Server

  • Existing and new lecture recordings of TU Clausthal are made available on the video server and integrated into the course in Stud.IP. The provision of the videos can be controlled by the lecturers in Stud.IP (e.g. for a limited time). In this way the teachers have control over the videos they provide. You can create and remove the link(s) to the recordings of your events in Stud.IP at any time.
  • Via the video server the recordings are made available exclusively via streaming. A download option is generally not offered.
  • Task of the lecturers: Check existing videos for their suitability, produce new recordings with computer center support.
  • Teachers establish communication with students via the learning management systems and other channels in order to clarify any difficulties in understanding or questions and to make clear how the recordings provided are to be used for learning purposes (see Module 7).

Module 2 "Instructional videos"

  • Teaching videos are an essential component of the concept for the hybrid winter semester 2020/2021. It is necessary to fall back on existing own videos or new videos to be produced.
  • The videos are stored on the video server and are integrated into Stud.IP.
  • On the video server you will find an overview of all available offers with lecture recordings and an overview of offers with recordings of exercises/tutorials.
  • Teaching videos are a one-way medium. The passive consumption of instructional videos will not create sustainable learning success. Communication is essential so that students can actively deal with the topics. Accordingly, the use of instructional videos requires the parallel establishment of a teacher-learner dialogue (pillars II and III).
a) "stock videos
(b) 'lecture theatre recordings'.
  • The RZ has set up two lecture halls (Gr. Physik-HS, Multimedia-HS Tannenhöhe) in order to produce lecture recordings with the teachers. Lecture hall recordings are particularly important for lectures, where blackboards and other media and visual aids are an essential component.
  • Clausthal University of Technology has good technical equipment for lecture recordings in the lecture hall with trained specialists and can produce very high-quality videos.
  • If you would like to record your lecture together with the multimedia team, please send an e-mail to medientechnik@tu-clausthal.de.
  • RZ and ZHD provide support in the design of the videos and the development of a didactic concept.
  • In all lecture halls with a microphone, the recording tool Camtasia is installed on the lecture hall PCs, which allows self recordings in the lecture hall (see also module 2c).
c) "Independent screen recordings
  • In this alternative module, the teachers produce the videos on their own computers using the "Camtasia" program or the recording function in PowerPoint. Not only can lectures be recorded, but also, for example, videos on the operation of a software, videos with programming examples, etc.
  • The RZ has procured Camtasia as a campus license and can therefore make licenses available to all teachers via the RZ Support.
  • On the website of the Camtasia supplier Techsmith you can find several tutorial videos which show the functions.
  • Camtasia gives educators the flexibility to produce videos of any length. Several shorter videos meet the learning needs of students.
  • An upload form is available on the video server for uploading screen recordings. This form can be accessed internally at TU or via the menu item "Upload" when using the VPN client. The login is done with your RZ account. To release your account for the video upload, please send an e-mail to support@rz.tu-clausthal.de.
  • For videos that are to be made available only temporarily or as downloads, it is advisable to upload them in the file area of an event in Stud.IP if the file size is small or to use the Academiccloud for larger videos.
  • RZ and ZHD support the technical and didactic design of the videos.
  • In all lecture halls with microphone, the recording tool Camtasia is installed on the lecture hall PCs.
  • A lecture held on the lecture hall PC can then be recorded independently by a lecturer using Camtasia. The respective lecture hall microphone must be used to record the audio signal.
  • On request to support@rz.tu-clausthal.de, seminar rooms can also be equipped accordingly, for example. The RZ has a total of five sets (camera, microphone) available for recording with Camtasia in seminar rooms without the appropriate equipment

Module 3 "Presence events

  • The hygiene concept of TU Clausthal must be observed. Since distance rules must be observed and thus no direct contact is possible, digital aids should be used, e.g. in order to be able to discuss students' work in digital form in presence.
  • Technical solutions:
    • In some lecture halls/rooms (large physics lecture hall, multimedia lecture hall Tannenhöhe, lecture hall geotechnics/mark segregation, computer center seminar room) the computer center provides a Crestron Airmedia Device. Students can use this device to project their screen (notebook, smartphone, etc.) onto the lecture hall beamer.
    • Work is digitized (e.g. mobile phone picture, scan, pdf-document), sent by e-mail to the respective lecturer and projected in the lecture hall via the beamer. Using an existing pen display, the teacher can add comments to the paper if necessary.

Module 4 "Hybrid event (participants in parallel presence and online)

  • Such a type of event is usually difficult to handle and therefore rather not recommended. Alternatives are, for example, asynchronous teaching scenarios in which video recordings are used or a purely online event via BigBlueButton (BBB).
  • BBB is basically usable for the hybrid scenario considered here.
  • Practical experience has shown that events with a high number of participants (approx. 200) can be held in BigBlueButton.
  • The auditorium computer should be used for the presentation and BBB. In this case the audio of the teacher can be transmitted via the lecture hall microphone for the participants in BBB.
  • Optionally a camera can be used to activate the camera image of the teacher in BBB.
  • Via screen splitting (full screen), physically and digitally present persons can see the same slides/media.
  • The cameras and microphones of participants in BBB should remain deactivated. Questions can be asked in the public chat in BBB.
  • Direct communication between the participants in presence and the participants connected online is not possible. Questions from students in the lecture hall must always be repeated for students connected via BBB. The same applies in reverse for questions posted in the BBB Chat.
  • A moderator (Wimi, Hiwi) is required to administer BBB, especially to supervise the chat.
